A cat is a mammal with four legs, a tail and head that has two pointed ears whiskers. Nose and mouth. There are a number of popular types of cats that people have has pets – short-haired, long haired and then other types like Burmese and Siamese cats. These typically are short haired, short tails and meow loudly.
Cats generally have two meals a day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon as well as water to drink. They sleep during day and night, and hunt small reptiles and rodents like mice and lizards.
Cats have territorial areas – and this is not restricted to a person’s property of section. It is a common occurrence that a cat might walk through a neighbour’s section.
Historically, cats were known in Egyptian times, as identified on cave drawings. There are many cat icons. Cats make a purring noise when they are happy, which is quite typical of a domestic cat. Cats like to sit on a person’s lap while being patted. This brings enjoyment to the person patting the cat and is often a reason why people have animals in homes or retirement homes. Although cats do socialise with their owners, it is often perceived because they are the ones that feed them. Cats often rub up against a person’ legs when seeking attention.
Cats usually walk or run and can jump to some height. They are particularly unpopular in communities because they catch bird life which can have a detrimental effect on the number of native birds in a district. Cats enjoy chasing things, as they have a hunting instinct and spend long hours watching and playing with a mouse or lizard, patting it with their paw, watching it run away and then corner it only to pat it again. Cats are often kept in homes in some areas to keep the rodent population to a minimum, by hunting them and reducing numbers and stopping rapid increase in population.
A cat has a litter of about 4 to 6 kittens unless the cat has been spayed by a veterinarian to neuter the cat and prevent it from producing kittens. Kittens feed milk from their mothers and often kept with the mother for the first 6 weeks before going to other families as kittens. They are often in pet shops at specific times of the year.
There are a number of other animals in the cat family. While cats in homes are domestic cats, the most common wild cats include lions, tigers, and cheetahs. These wild cats roam prairies in places like Africa. Lion babies are called cubs. These animals prey on smaller animals like deer and wild animals that might drink at watering holes.
